Maximize Effectiveness of Job Shadowing
The job shadowing experience for School at Work and ECHO students is a vitally important part of the career exploration process. The CLC team has heard many times that shadowing was a critical last step in determining which career path would be the best fit for a student’s personality, strengths and interests. Shadowing is a big time investment, for you, the shadowing manager and the SAW/ECHO student. CLC wants to help you make the most of it!
During SAW, students are encouraged to complete a job shadowing experience in the Career and Learning Plan in Module 5 of the Becoming a Healthcare Professional Course. To assist your students in making the most of the job shadowing experience, we have provided three tools:
- Job Shadowing Checklist – This will help students thoroughly prepare for the job shadowing experience. The checklist breaks down the important action items that need to be accomplished before, during, and after the visit.
- Job Shadowing Interview Questions – A list of 10 interview questions is provided to help students ask appropriate and helpful questions.
- Job Shadowing Evaluation Form – The evaluation form should be completed by the person being shadowed. This will help the Coach and student to evaluate the effectiveness of the experience.
To access these tools, visit the Coach Resource Center. |

Employee Engagement Surveys
Early 2008, CLC added pre and post assessments of Employee Engagement to SAW/ECHO. This gives Coaches the ability to measure the impact participation has on student morale, loyalty, and other factor that affect engagement. In these economic times, being able to discuss return on investment (RoI) is more important than ever, and this report may be used as a tool to demonstrate SAW’s RoI with your upper management.
If you have students who completed this survey in the modules prior to 12/31/08 and would like a copy of your report, contact your Client Relations Coordinator.
You Asked, We Listened: New Coach Reports
Additional LMS Reports have recently been added to help you manage your SAW and ECHO classes. All of these reports are accessed from the Coach Reports link in the left navigation bar on your Home Page.
New Reports include:
- Username Password Report: Coaches can now access the usernames and passwords for students and for Assistant Coaches.
- Student Transcript: This report allows coaches to view and print course progress for individual students. Simply select the class and student name to view both completed and incomplete modules. This report also gives you the date of completion, module scores, and last date accessed for modules in progress.
- Self-Check Score Report: This is a summary report for the entire class that displays the score received on the Self-Check activity in each online module. This report also provides scores for the overall course Pre and Post Assessments.
Meet Catalyst Learning's Newest Addition to the Client Relations team!
Our Client Relations Department is Growing!
Marguerite Shulhafer joined the department in January, but she is not new to the Catalyst Learning Team. She began her career at the company in 2008, and when offered an opportunity to join the Client Relations Department, she enthusiastically accepted. Marguerite’s first adventure into healthcare and education began as a Registered Radiologic Technologist, she then completed a Master’s Degree in Education, as she continued to serve thirteen years as the Clinical Educator for Ancillary Services at the University of Louisville Hospital. Along with her experience in all these areas, she also brings an excitement for working more closely with SAW and ECHO Coaches to help guide them to a successful journey with their students…and she says, “being part of the Client Relations Team is a bonus in my professional life!” |

Bridgeport Hospital SAW graduate enrolls in Houstatonic Community College

Dorcas (center) with coaches Lorraine Iverson and Marge Stehman
Dorcas Chinyumba is a Patient Care Tech 1 at Bridgeport Hospital in Bridgeport, CT. After graduating from SAW, she enrolled in the Nursing program at Houstatonic Community College.
Dorcas came to the United States in 1999 from the Democratic Republic of Congo. At that time, she enrolled in the Bridgeport Parent Resource Center to help her with English. Dorcas accepted a position at Bridgeport Hospital in 2006; she was accepted into SAW in 2008. Dorcas credits the program with helping her learn many new skills, but especially appreciates the grammar portion of the course.
Setting and reaching a goal like college enrollment so soon after moving to a new country demonstrates an extremely high level of confidence and motivation.
Dorcas says that, "(Coaches) Marge & Lorraine taught me that ‘there is no such thing as can't’ and that is what I say to myself as I prepare for Nursing School." |

SAW Supports HCA's Healthy Work Environment Initiatives

SAW Coach Roberta Pettis, Director of Education at Nashville Shared Services Center, launched the site’s first SAW class in August 2008 with 13 students. Roberta and her leadership team emphasize the program’s coordination with Healthy Work Environment initiatives and HCA’s commitment to retain and develop employees.
“We are committed to fostering an environment where employees feel engaged and valued,” said Roberta. “As part of our Healthy Work Environment, we want to retain and develop our workforce, increase retention and improve employee morale. SAW is helping us accomplish these goals by developing and investing in our employees and encouraging them to continue their education. This is truly a great program where I have the awesome opportunity to see the changes it’s making in the lives of our employees on a daily basis.”
Since so many employees were interested in continuing their education, Nashville Shared Services worked with University of Phoenix to set up an Education Fair that was attended by 14 local colleges and universities and nearly 200 employees. The schools that attended are also conducting on-site “Lunch and Learns”, which are one-hour sessions to discuss available educational opportunities, financial assistance and admissions.
Roberta’s CEO, Rick Baker, says that, “SAW is a great way to 'grow our own' succession planning program and give our employees a chance to 'pad' their resume. SAW has also opened doors to begin offering our college education fair which gives more opportunities to our SAW graduates.” |
