How It Works

For Success in School at Work

The success of School at Work is completely dependent upon the hospital and the site coach. Top management needs to support the program to ensure resource availability.
Icon_coach 1. Designate a Coach
  • Assign a Coach to oversee and facilitate the program
  • Coach will monitor all testing as required by the program
  • Recommendation: An HR/Education Team
  • Dedicates 3 -4 hrs/week
  • Well organized
  • Enthusiastic
  • Effective facilitator
  • Strong inter-departmental working relationships
    (for networking students and assisting with career goals achievement)

  • Sessions begin the first week of every month
  • Class meets for two hours each week for 6 months
  • Weekly classes include DVD, computer sessions, and group activities
  • Coach works with department managers (student supervisors) to define a re-occurring weekly day and time for class sessions
  • Coach notifies CLC, students and students’ managers of the Class Schedule

Student Schedule
Student must be able to attend:

  • TABE screening
  • DVD sessions
  • On-line classroom sessions
  • Post-assessment

Recruitment 4. Employee Recruitment and Assessment
  • Recruit a minimum of 17-20 employees for the TABE screening
    *SAW has a reading comprehension requirement. Recruiting 17-20 individuals for the TABE screening is recommended to ensure a starting class size of 10 students.
  • SAW provides materials to assist you with employee recruiting
  • Inform employees about the TABE screening
  • Schedule employees for the TABE screening
    * The Coach should work with SAW Field Support on the scheduled time for the TABE screening
    * SAW maintains student confidentiality on assessment scores
    * SAW phones the Coach to deliver results

Compensation options:

  1. Regular pay check with no hours deducted
  2. Employee left off clock during class, then receives a bonus upon completion of equivalent amount
